James L. Roach, Sr.,
86, of Mansfield, died Friday, June 17, 2016 surrounded by his family at Sturdy Memorial Hospital from recently diagnosed esophageal cancer. He was the beloved husband of the late Rita Marie (Shaw) to whom he was married for 60 years at the time of her death in 2013. He was pre-deceased by his only son, James L. Roach, Jr. who died six weeks ago on May 9, 2016.
Born on July 14, 1929, he was the loving son of the late Lawrence and Helen (Kernighan) Roach. He was raised in Foxboro with his three sisters; Corinne MacIntire of Raynham and the late Nan Ryan and Janice Verdone. He was a 1947 graduate of Foxboro High School, where he was class president.
After graduating, he began working for the former A & P Market and continued to work hard every day to support his family until his retirement in 1991. He and his wife Rita met on Nantucket in 1949 where they were both working summer jobs. They were married in 1953 and spent the first ten years of their marriage in Foxboro. They moved to Mansfield in 1963 and raised their six children at 29 Columbus Avenue, in a house that he loved.
He was a long-time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mansfield until its closing and was a current member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Foxboro. He coached Little League for many years and after his retirement worked both at the Mansfield Town Hall and the voting polls. He was a New England Patriots season ticket holder since 1971 and attended most home games until the age of 78. His main enjoyments were spending time at his home with his family, taking care of his house and yard and cooking for and hosting large family gatherings.
He will be forever loved and missed by his five daughters and their husbands; Patricia and Scot Tinant of Lakeview, SD, Jean and Raymond Cyr of Cambridge, Nancy and Michael LeRoux of Mansfield, Julie and James Finn of Foxboro, Gail and Mark Douglas of Stoughton; his nine grandchildren, Ellsworth, Lucas, Marshal and Alex Tinant, Christine Bingham, Michael Roach, Emily Cyr, Maura and Jill Finn; three great grandchildren, Raken, Takorah and Victor Tinant. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, George Goldwait of Hyde Park and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church,116 South St. Foxboro on Thursday, June 23rd at 10 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be held at the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home 115 N. Main St. Mansfield on Wednesday, June 22nd from 5 to 8 pm. Burial at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
