Donald L. Huston,
of Peabody, formerly of Nahant for 45 years, died peacefully on June 7, 2016. He was 89. Husband of the late Dorothy H. (Gunrud) Huston, they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary prior to her death in 2015. He was born in Taunton on February 11, 1927 he was the son of the late Harold C. and Dorothy F. (Kerr) Huston.
Mr. Huston was raised in Mansfield and was a 1946 graduate of Mansfield High School, prior to his graduation he enlisted in the US Coast Guard being assigned to the patrol frigate U.S.S. Gladwyne, PF62 during WWII. After returning home from the war he completed his education at Storm King Prep School and University of Maine at Orono graduating in 1954 with a BS in Civil Engineering, PE.
For many years Mr. Huston was employed as a Civil Engineer and superintendent for both the towns of Nahant and Swampscott. Mr. Huston was a 50 year member and a 33 degree Mason raised in both the English and Scottish rite of the St. James Lodge in Mansfield. He was also a Senior Life member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery of Boston and the Massachusetts State Guard, serving 15 years and retiring as a Brigadier General.
He rebuilt the 35 foot original 1915 Friendship Sloop “Eagle” in 1964. A licensed captain he sailed Massachusetts Bay and the Gulf of Maine for 45 years, competing and wining many trophies while racing in the Friendship Sloop Society Regatta’s. Mr. Huston sailed throughout the Caribbean. He was the Commodore of the Friendship Sloop Society and Commodore of both Lynn and Swampscott Yacht Clubs. He also enjoyed his summer’s at Chase’s Ocean Grove in Dennisport at the cottage he and his Father had built when he was a boy. An avid world adventurer who traveled extensively and wintered on Luquillo Beach, Puerto Rico for 20 years with his late wife.
His survivors include two sons, Dennis L. Huston and his wife Joanne from Wareham and Dean R. Huston and his wife Rebecca of Amesbury; a daughter, Diane H. Fassak and her husband John of Mansfield; three grandchildren, Joshua N. Huston and his wife Julie of Amesbury, Laura E. Fassak of Chevy Chase, MD, John Donald Fassak of Portland, ME; three great grandchildren, Caleb, Ava and Olivia Huston of Amesbury.
Funeral from the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home, 115 North Main Street, Mansfield on Saturday, June 11th at 10:00am. Graveside service to follow at Spring Brook Cemetery, Mansfield at 11 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 10th from 4:00 to 7:00pm.
