Anthony G. Sandonato, P.E., of Quincy, died peacefully on Monday, May 2, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Anthony was born in Quincy on August 6, 1924, the son of the late Frank and Jenny Sandonato. 

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Lydia (Fertile)Sandonato; his son, Francis Sandonato and his wife Diane Sandonato; his daughter Ann Lombardi and her husband Joseph Lombardi; and his five grandchildren, Lisa, Michelle, Dean, Matthew and Amy. He is also survived by his sisters Francis Spadorcia and Dora Giglio and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late Mary Laujelle and Eleanor Cook and brother-in-law and best friend to the late Fiorenzo (Feudy) Fertile.

Tony served with the Army and Air Corps in the European Theater of Operations from 1943 to 1945.  A highly decorated veteran, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, three Battle Stars and a Combat Infantryman Badge. After his distinguished service to our Country, Tony attended Northeastern University and received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in June 1949. Tony was a Registered Land Surveyor and Registered Professional Engineer. He was appointed District Highway Engineer for Greater Boston, and held that prestigious position until his retirement.

He was a member of the Massachusetts Organization of State Engineers and Scientists, Torre Di Passerie Club, the city of Quincy planning board, and served on the Quincy Zoning Board of Appeals for 20 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, and always being there for all of the important moments in their lives.  He was one of a kind not only for his intelligence, but also for his kindness of spirit.

Funeral mass at St. John's Church, 44 School Street, Quincy on Saturday, May 7th at 9:00 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial at Mount Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy. Visiting hours at the Bolea-Buonfiglio Funeral Home, 116 Franklin Street, Quincy on Friday, May 6th from 4 to 8 pm.
