Edward A. Sliney, Sr.,
of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the age of 85. He was the husband of the late Yvonne (O'Regan) Sliney to whom he was married for 49 years and who predeceased him on October 21, 1997. The son of the late Francis and Elsie (McCleary) Sliney, Ed was raised and educated in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston and was a 1945 graduate of Jamaica Plain High School. The family eventually moved to Mansfield where he has resided for the past 65 years.
A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Ed proudly served his country. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for the New Haven Railroad in South Boston. The majority of his career, however, was spent working on the Mansfield Police Department. In 1954 at the age of 25 he was appointed as patrolman and was promoted through the ranks to become Sergeant, and, subsequently, Detective Sergeant.
He also served as Court Prosecutor in the 4th District Court in Attleboro, and many times during his years of service he was appointed Acting Chief of the police department. At various times throughout his career, Ed attended the FBI Academy, Suffolk University and Northeastern University. He received numerous commendations for his work on some of the department's major investigations.
Ed took great pride in belonging to numerous civic organizations. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Mansfield Council #11690 and the Disabled American Veterans as well as a charter member of the Mansfield Elks Lodge #2633. He held membership in the Fraternal Order of Police and was a member of the Southeastern Mass. Police Chiefs Association.
Throughout the years Ed served with pride the community of Mansfield. From 1980-1989 he was President and Chairman of the board of the Mansfield Credit Union. He also derived great pleasure and satisfaction from serving as board member on the Council on Aging from 1997 to the present. He enjoyed the friendships he made and was intent upon making a difference for the senior citizens of Mansfield.
Ed was also very devoted and committed to his church, St. Mary's Parish in Mansfield, where he served as an usher and collector. Every Saturday he could be found with a smile on his face greeting church goers as they entered to celebrate the four o'clock mass. He considered it an honor when Father George asked him to join the building committee for St. Mary's Catholic School. In November of 2013 Ed was awarded the Marian Medal from the Diocese of Fall River for his devotion and service to St. Mary's Parish.
He is survived by his two devoted daughters, Kathleen Tartufo and her husband Edward of Mansfield and Karen Vaughan and her husband James of Mansfield; two sons Edward Sliney, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Mansfield and Kevin Sliney and his wife Chrissy of North Carolina; his sisters, Helen Paille, Betty Judge, Barbara Finn and Patricia Sliney; six grandchildren: Paul Tartufo, Brian Tartufo, Kristy Fontaine, Justin Sliney, Kaylin Sliney and Tristan Sliney and six great-grandchildren: Julia Tartufo, Matthew and Emily Tartufo, Ethan and Emma Sliney and Max Fontaine.
