Stephen J. McGrath,
City of Quincy's Director of Human Resources, passed away Friday, August 9, 2013 at Boston Medical Center. He was 59 years old and the beloved husband of E. Jane (Madden) McGrath for 19 years.
Born in Boston on August 12, 1953, he was the loving son of the late James and Frances (Ronan) McGrath. Mr. McGrath was a graduate of Archbishop Williams High School Class of 1971, Boston College Class of 1975 and Suffolk Law School in 1978.
Mr. McGrath was a Practicing Attorney in the City of Quincy and was devoted to public service. He served as Ward 5 City Councilor and was then elected Councilor-At-Large in 1987, served as President of the City Council from 1986-1987, became Candidate for Mayor in 1989, and served as City Solicitor for 12 years. He also served as Legal Counsel at Quincy College and was the former Director of Development at Archbishop Williams High School.
He was the dear brother of David McGrath and his wife Molly of Fairfield, CT and Pat McGrath and her partner Penny Manners of Bedford, NH. He was the cherished uncle of Brooke, Suzanne and Clara McGrath, all of Fairfield, CT, Patrick and Liam Folan both of Westwood, Marc Thomas of Westport, Jillian Madden of N. Andover and Brendan Thomas of Tampa, FL. He was the nephew of Norma McGrath of St. Cloud, FL and Pat Ronan of Quincy, brother-in-law of Thomas Folan and his wife Cathy of Westwood, son-in-law of Anna Madden of Quincy and is also survived by several cousins and close friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church, 757 Hancock Street, Quincy on Wednesday, August 14th at 12:30pm. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the Bolea-Buonfiglio Funeral Home, 116 Franklin Street in Quincy on Tuesday from 4-8pm. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. McGrath's memory to the Servants of Christ Ministries, 87A Maple Street, Scituate, MA 02066-3609.
