James A. Garland, Sr.,
a lifelong resident of Mansfield, died Tuesday March 27 at Norwood Hospital. He was 82. Mr. Garland was the husband of Beverly L. (Richards) Garland for over 60 years.
Born in Mansfield on June 12, 1929, Mr. Garland was the son of the late James and Helen (Meyers) Garland. He was a graduate of Mansfield High School and enlisted in the US Army during the Korean War, serving for the Army Security Agency.
Mr. Garland graduated from Brown University in 1951 and earned a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work at Boston University. He served extensively in the field of social work as a Professor of Social Work at BU Graduate School and as a Past President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Mr. Garland dedicated his life to Human Services and was a devoted family man.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Garland is survived by four children, James A. Garland, Jr., of Foster, RI, Daniel C. Garland, of North Attleboro, Sarah E. Garland, of Manchester, VT and David A. Garland, of Mansfield. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visiting hours will be held in the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home, 115 North Main St., Mansfield on Saturday March 31 from 2-6pm followed by a Funeral Service at 6pm. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment will be private.
