Francis Joseph Michael McDermott,
of North Attleboro passed away on
Saturday June 4 at home after a long illness. He was 83. Born July
10, 1927 in Somerville, MA, he was the son of the late Louis Arthur
McDermott and MaryAnn (Quiggley) McDermott. During WWII, he served
with the Merchant Marines in both the European and Asian theaters of
the conflict. He married Geraldine Galanti of Mansfield on April 22,
1950 and they moved to Astoria, Oregon, where Frank served with the
Astoria Fire Department. The couple moved back to Mansfield in 1953.
Frank owned and operated a delivery route for Garelick Brothers Farms
in Franklin for many years and later worked at Drakes Bakery in
Mansfield until his retirement in 1986. Frank and Geraldine spent the
next decade and a half criss-crossing the country in their travel
trailer visiting 48 states. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding
Anniversary in Ireland in 2000.
Mr. McDermott is survived by his wife Geraldine; daughters MaryAnn Small and her husband Mark of Foxboro; Kathleen Engdahl and her husband Mark of Dedham; Patricia Silberhorn and her husband Tom of Plainville; son Michael McDermott and his wife LeeAnn of Wrentham; nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home, 115 N. Main Street, Mansfield on Tuesday June 7 at 10am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 5-8pm. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. McDermott’s memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney Street, Boston, MA 02115 or to Steward Home Care & Hospice, 3 Edgewater Dr., Norwood, MA 02062.
