Mary A. (Silenzi) Keelon, age 71, died of corticobasal ganglionic degeneration at home, peacefully, surrounded by her family Thursday, February 11, 2010 .
Mrs. Keelon was born in Quincy on November 7, 1938. She graduated from Quincy High School Class of 1956 and Boston University in 1960. She was a resident of Braintree for 47 years.
She began her teaching career as a Math teacher at East Jr. High School in Braintree. After taking time off to raise her children, she returned to teaching in the Braintree School system at Central and then South Jr., completing the majority of her career at Braintree High School. She retired after a total of 23 years in June 2000. She and her husband traveled extensively, including Italy, Ireland, Spain, Great Britain, Bermuda and Canada, as well as numerous states in the U.S. She was an avid tennis player. She enjoyed flower gardening, especially day lilies, cooking, long walks and Solitaire on the computer. Her 11 grandchildren and newest great-grandchild gave her tremendous joy.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James L. Keelon. She was the daughter of the late David and Mary (Solari) Silenzi , and mother of Kathleen Cotton and her husband William, Laurie Keelon, and Colonel Joseph Keelon and his wife Kalen, Linda Bons and Louise Hoye and her husband Richard . She was the grandmother of Jennifer and Matthew Cotton, Amanda, Sean and Kerri Burke and Evan Corbitt, Sarah, Kelly and Stephen Keelon, and Dillan and Ryan Pitts. She was the great-grandmother of Logan Corliss.
Friends and family are respectfully invited to visit the Bolea-Buonfiglio Funeral Home, 116 Franklin Street, Quincy, from 2 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, February 14. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am at St. Thomas More Church, Hawthorn Rd, Braintree, on Monday, February 15. Burial will be at the Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree.
